Is Transplantation of Hair Permanent?

The short answer is “Yes”! In fact, the only permanent solution to going bald is to get a hair transplant. Let us explain.

The transplanted hair comes from an area of the patient’s scalp where hair is genetically programmed to grow for life. This is typically at back of the head. You can see that someone who started going bald at a young age still has hair in the donor site even after he is 70 years old. This is precisely the same area where hair is excess in supply and therefore could be extracted from, and then redistributed to the implanted section of your scalp.

That said, the permanence of your new look, post-transplant, depends on several factors -

  1. You should find a renowned clinic with a trained doctor

  2. The donor region for the hair transplant should not be over harvested so that it can be used, if needed, for another transplant later — no, I am not saying that transplanted hair is not permanent but the other hair, around it, can be lost resulting in a need of a second or a third transplant. At Evolved Clinics, we are always mindful that you have only one donor area!

  • You should follow your doctor’s advice and use the prescribed medication after the procedure for further hair loss prevention. Again, this is very important especially in patients who continue to experience hair loss from the surrounding area after surgery.

Coming back to the hair transplant procedure, the newly transplanted hairs will typically shed 2–4 weeks post surgery and there will be a period of waiting for the new hairs to re-appear. This is an expected, temporary and a natural process. This loss is a reaction of the body to the trauma during surgery. After this initial shedding, your permanent hair grows back and the process follows a normal course.

In most cases, some of the transplanted hair will start to appear 2–3 months after a hair transplant. Most patients see their near full results in around 9 months to one year. In few cases, patients can be a “slow/late grower”. These patients may have to wait up to 18 months to see full maturation of the transplanted hairs.

Once the new hair grows out, it will last throughout your lifetime.
